StarPeace project is a global project aimed at connecting people living on two sides of the land or sea borders of different countries by conducting joint star parties to show that the sky, being the same everywhere, could act as a bridge to join the people of the world regardless of the race, culture or nation they belong to. StarPeace is made possible by volunteer participation of active amateur astronomical groups around the world.
In the International Year of Astronomy two kinds of global projects are introduced: First, Cornerstone Projects which are designed and conducted by the International Astronomical Union and UNESCO. These projects will be evaluated after the end of the International Year of Astronomy for their effectiveness. Second, Special Projects which cover at least one of the goals of the IYA2009 and are done worldwide.
Until now IYA2009 had included 11 Cornerstone and 7 Special Projects in its list of activities for the year. Today with addition of the StarPeace and BLAST, the count of Special Projects has reached 9.
StarPeace in coalition with other projects of IYA2009 is working on making this year more effective. Last week Yuri’s Night and StarPeace, in a worldwide effort, joined forces to provide the public with the wonders of the space by mixing the beauties of the sky with space explorations.
StarPeace is organized by the Sky Peace non-profit non-governmental organization and Astronomical Society of Iran which is the organizational node of IYA2009 in Iran. Ten groups out of 9 countries have joined Project StarPeace until now. StarPeace started its official activities at the dawn of 2009 by conducting star parties on two sides of the Persian Gulf in Qeshm Island, Iran and Dubai, UAE.
Organizing committee of the StarPeace project eagerly asks all active astronomy groups from around the world to join this project and hold star parties at their countries’ borderlines in an effort to bring friendship and peace to the people of the world.
