What is StarPeace project?
StarPeace project is a global project aimed at connecting people living on two sides of the land or sea borders of different countries by conducting joint star parties to show that the sky, being the same everywhere, could act as a bridge to join the people of the world regardless of the race, culture or nation they belong to.

What is IYA2009?
The International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) is a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture and marks the 400th anniversary of the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo Galilei.  The aim of the Year is to stimulate worldwide interest, especially among young people, in astronomy and science under the central theme "The Universe, Yours to Discover". To learn more about UYA2009 and its projects go to: www.astronomy2009.org

What is StarPeace theme?
"Where I am, let it be so, the sky is mine." is StarPeace theme. It's a part of a poem written by Sohrab Sepehri, Iranian contemporary poet.

What are the goals of StarPeace?
StarPeace main goal is to promote peace and science and to show that there is no border for science.
Moreover, StarPeace satisfies four goals of the IYA2009 goals and is aligned with the IYA2009 vision:

StarPeace project will cause the astronomy groups to cooperate with their neighbor countries and this leads to make the relationship and to strengthen the relationships between both groups and also to make network of active astronomy groups in that region (Facilitate new networks and strengthen existing ones).

Cooperation of astronomy groups in countries with non-free land border is notable, because many of these countries are developing and cooperation between these groups and countries around them causes to strengthen power and survival of astronomy groups in developing countries. (Empower astronomical communities in developing countries)
Besides the star party, speech and astronomy photos fair can help to improve knowledge and scientific insight of residents of both countries and prepare a durable peace between them, also. (Increase scientific awareness)

StarPeace is a project based on the sky observation by tools and this is memorable experience for people worldwide. (Promote widespread access to new knowledge and observing experiences)

All of these goals make StarPeace closely aligned with the IYA2009 vision that help the citizens of the world rediscover their place in the Universe.

Does StarPeace relate to Star Wars?
StarPeace title is originated from Star Wars title, with this idea that sky is a place for Peace not Wars. But as a whole StarPeace project is not related to Star Wars in any way.

Who is organizing StarPeace?
StarPeace is organized by the Sky Peace Non-Profit Non-Governmental Organization and Astronomical Society of Iran which is the organizational node of IYA2009 in Iran.

Who hold the StarPeace observation nights?
StarPeace project is made possible by volunteer participation of active amateur astronomical groups around the globe.

What does “Global Special Project” mean?
To reach to its goals, The International Year of Astronomy 2009 is supported by eleven Cornerstone projects. The Cornerstone projects are supported by a number of Special projects, which will develop interactions and link the different initiatives and projects within IYA2009. These projects provide extra means to achieve the IYA2009's main goals and objectives. To know more about Special projects, click here.

Does StarPeace have relationship with other Organizations such as YurisNight, AWB and Sidewalk Astronomy Night?
Yuri’s Night and StarPeace collaborate on promoting astronomy and space and making changes on Earth by the wonders and beauties of space. The main idea of StarPeace is in some ways the same as projects such as projects of Astronomers Without Borders and Sidewalk Astronomy Night. But the organizers are different. StarPeace welcome every organization to help us and hold StarPeace events worldwide.

For Joined Clubs:

Does StarPeace help us financially to organize a star party?

StarPeace core team could not afford any financial support for joined clubs. It has been suggested that clubs try to get governmental or private sponsors in their country to support their StarPeace travels, if they are not able to pay the expenses.

How can I contact with my neighboring countries’ astronomy clubs?
Some countries are already joined StarPeace, if your neighboring country is among them just send an email to them or to info@starpeace.org and we connect you together. If your neighboring country is not among the joined countries and you know no astronomy group in that country you may search for active and experienced astronomy clubs in portals such as Astronomy Clubs, Sky and Telescope Club lists or list of participants in astronomy events such as 100 Hours of Astronomy, Yuri's Night, etc. After finding the appropriate group in your neighboring country you could contact them and ask to register in StarPeace or send an email to info@starpeace.org and ask us to contact them.

Should the star party be near the border?
According to StarPeace vision the public star party should be organized in opposite sides of a border. This project may be done in all countries with shared land border, but they are divided into two categories according to the public star party program.

In the first category there are countries which have no free border, so public star party is held in a place near the shared border of the countries so that people of both countries are joined by the sky.

The second category includes countries with free border; people of both countries are gathered together in zero-border point in a night to improve their connection in the sky as well as earth.

To cover all countries worldwide, StarPeace project recommends countries limited by their water border to choose a night by cooperation of astronomy groups of other country with the same situations to observe the sky, so that infinity of the sky and freedom of water join their countries. It should be noted that countries limited by their water borders should be geographically near each other so that they can observe the sky simultaneously for some hours.

If for political and/or safety reasons it is difficult for you to travel to your border, two countries can organize star party in a city near their borderlines, but not necessarily very close to the border.

In unsafe borders, what should the clubs do?
If for political and/or safety reasons it is difficult for you to travel to your border, two countries can organize star party in a city near their borderlines, but not necessarily very close to the border.

When is the appropriate time for holding the star parties?
Since the program is for the public, the best time is when celestial objects such as quarter Moon, planets like Jupiter, Saturn, etc. are in the night sky. Weather condition is another important factor. One may hold the public star party on a national or international cultural or specific day, such as Astronomy Day. At last, you and your neighboring country could choose any day which you think is the best.

Should the star party be between two countries?
StarPeace public star parties should be between at least two countries. More than two countries are for sure welcomed too.

Should the star party be public?
StarPeace project is aimed to promote peace between nations and show that there is no border for science. So ordinary people are our main audiences and the star party should be for public.

Who is Ambassador? Who is coordinator?
StarPeace ambassador is an experienced veteran astronomer, who will manage all of the StarPeace activities in him/her country and we would be in contact with him/her.

StarPeace coordinator is an experienced astronomer who will hold a StarPeace event in his/her city/region. He is the coordinator of the event in his region and he should be in contact with his ambassador. If the country has no ambassador the coordinator should be in contact with StarPeace core team.

What other projects can we hold during our StarPeace star party?
StarPeace is collaborating with two other projects: Yuri Night and UNAWE. Yuri’s Night is a celebration of humanity’s achievements in space. Each April 12, people from around the world come together to mark the anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s first flight into space (in 1961) and the first launch of the US Space Shuttle (in 1981). UNAWE is an international outreach activity that uses the beauty and grandeur of the universe to inspire very young disadvantaged children.

Beside these two projects, StarPeace team strongly recommends to hold public astronomy speeches and astronomical photo exhibitions such as FETTU and TWAN at the same time depending upon activity potential in same border point. Also products of projects like The Galileoscope and 400 Years of Telescope could improve the quality of program. It has been suggested that all the clubs visit Cornerstone and Special projects of IYA to see which could help them to hold a better program.
